Electric Shuttle Bus Range and Charging: Planning a Full Day of Operation

Range figures on a specification sheet and range in daily operation are two different numbers. A vehicle rated for a long range can still run out of shift time if charging windows are not planned around your actual duty cycle.

Calculate energy demand per route, not per kilometre

Two routes of equal length can differ by 40% in energy consumption. Factors that matter most:

  • Gradient — climbing consumes far more energy than flat running; a 20–25% grade section will dominate the route's consumption.
  • Load — a fully loaded 23-seat bus draws noticeably more than the same vehicle at half load.
  • Stop frequency — repeated acceleration from standstill is the second largest energy cost after climbing.
  • Climate — air conditioning in hot or humid conditions reduces usable range.

Typical range bands in the DAOD range

Depending on model and battery configuration, our sightseeing and shuttle vehicles are generally specified in the 80–180 km band. Larger battery packs extend range but add weight and cost, so the right question is: what is the longest uncharged duty period in your day?

Build a charging window into the timetable

Most operators we work with settle on a two-window pattern:

  1. Overnight full charge — the baseline. Slow charging is gentler on the battery and usually cheaper per kWh.
  2. Midday top-up — a fast-charge window during the low-traffic period (typically around two hours) that restores enough energy for the afternoon peak.

With a two-hour fast-charge capability, a vehicle that ran the morning loop can return to service for the afternoon with a full shift of range available.

Battery care that protects resale value

  • Avoid routinely discharging below 20% state of charge.
  • Prefer slow charging overnight when the timetable allows it.
  • In hot climates, park in shade between shifts to keep pack temperature down.
  • Track energy consumption per route monthly — a sudden rise usually signals tyre pressure, brake drag or pack degradation.

Send us your route profile (length, gradient, stops, daily hours) and we will estimate daily energy demand and propose a battery and charging configuration. Contact DAOD for an energy planning sheet.
